I saw this article in my local newspaper, but the same thing is happening in your city too. And don’t think this trend is only limited to the 20- and 30-year old set.
Last September, Amazon.com, the online retailer of books, sold more Kindle edition e-books (Kindle is the name of Amazon’s private label e-book reader) than physical print and ink books. Amazon already sells more books than any other single company, so let the implication of the announcement of last September’s Kindle edition e-book sales topping physical book sales sink in.
But as my dad used to say, “What does that have to do with the price of tea in China?” Meaning, what do Kindle e-book sales topping physical book sales have to do with nonprofit fund raising? Just this: communication is quickly shifting to digital electronic format. Behavior and habits of significant portions of the U. S. population in regards to acceptance of digital communication formats is rapidly changing!
How dependent is your fund raising organization on the paper and ink direct mail format to communicate your appeals and communications?
In the coming weeks and months, we will share stories of how other groups are starting to shift their communication mix to address the rise of Internet-based communications including social networks.
