BIG’s Blog: How Much Is 900 Million?

The latest figures tell us there are 900 million people on Facebook. Unlike 900 million grains of sand on the beach, each and every Facebook page is a person. Each of those persons has a different life, a different set of friends, and is passionate about many different things.

The author Seth Godin tells us, “The mass market is no longer. There is almost no room left for the next Procter & Gamble or Google. Instead, you are far more likely to do your best work if you are willing to delight a few as opposed to the masses.”

Can you take care of your missions if 1,000 Facebook followers each donated $50 a year? How about 5,000 Facebook followers each donating $50 a year? How about 25,000 Facebook followers each donating $50 a year? How about one million Facebook followers each donating $50 a year?

Think you can’t get one million Facebook followers? That’s only .001111% of Facebook users today.

Facebook was founded in 2003; it’s only nine years old, and today they have 900 million users.

How old is your organization?

If you share your mission on Facebook today for the first time and then intentionally work every day to develop Facebook followers, how long will it take you to get to one million followers?

How many Facebook followers will you have in nine years?

How many of your Facebook followers will be donating $50 a year to you in nine years?

At its present rate of decline, how many donations will be coming in from direct mail in nine years?
