BIG’s Blog: Celebrate Independence Day

Sometimes events come upon you – expected or unexpected – that force your hand. You must now do something you frankly didn’t want to do.

Such were the events forced upon the American British Colonies 236 years ago today. When the average-Joe American Colonist woke up that morning he was under the authority of King George of Great Britain. At sunset, if he sided with his fellow Colonists, he was in rebellion against the British Crown. And he knew that his life – for good or ill – would never be the same again.

Had the Colonies planned for war? Frankly, not enough.

Did the Colonists understand that declaring independence would trigger war with Great Britain? Yes, they most certainly did.

Great and momentous events – even when we know they are coming – have a tendency to happen first before we react to them. But when action is finally called for, we can choose to either plan or wing it.

Have a great 4th of July … we’ll get back to dealing with momentous events in fundraising tomorrow.
